Day 2 - leaving Stockholm for Uppsala

After a day (and 8 miles of walking) you get the idea of what Stockholm is all about. For day two we’re leaving the city and visiting a town 40 minutes north.

Let’s find out train and be off.

How can anyone pronounce these names?
They take their trains seriously here
Take a train to see Santa (a favorite excursion for kids)

Welcome to Uppsala, Sweden

Their modest train station
Seriously, these things are everywhere here
More small streets full of restaurants and shops

Walk a few more minutes and you find a scene which is so similar to Amsterdam

Here you get your first views of Uppsala Cathedral. This is the oldest church of the Nordic countries, dating back to 1270. At almost 400 feet tall it’s also the tallest.

It is even more stunning in person.

The blue in the hall needed a video to capture its beauty.

At noon a brass group goes to the overlook and plays for the locals.

The local university is responsible for maintaining the chapel. I had heard stories their actual university lecture hall was beyond beautiful. Of course I went to see if it was true.

The main university lecture hall
Past the entrance doors and this is what you see
Even the water fountains are impressive
Upstairs is the portrait gallery
Marble statues fill the gallery
At the center of the hall is this otherwise non-descriptive doors (which were locked). But that wasn’t going to stop me
A quick peek into the lecture hall.

The setting I came across was too beautiful – I had to go back and enjoy lunch there.

5pm and back to Stockholm. I wanted to explore a little more in the old city.

Yes this was delicious

The next two pictures depict the time where Norway fought and finally won the war against Denmark, regaining their independence.

10pm and dusk is beginning to set.

Off to bed. Tomorrow it’s time to board the ship.
