Day 9 - Utrecht, Netherlands

With the trip winding down, one final hotel move. A 3.5 hour train ride today.

Today was a reminder, when carrying a suitcase in Europe, always pay for that first class seat. Today is also Saturday. Saturday means groups of students come to the train depot to do some sort of field trip. At least 150 elementary-aged students are standing on the track waiting for this train. They all bought second class seats. By the time the train departs there are no seats on the train in second class while first class has plenty of room for you and your bag. Best $10 difference spent!

What a terrible mistake I made. While everyone knows about Amsterdam (and I fly out of there) I thought it would be a fun idea to see the next largest city in the country. Utrecht was billed as Amsterdam but without the hordes of tourists. In reality, this town is just four massive, mega malls. Huge, very modern shopping districts flood the region. Let’s explore the “old town” which is now converted into a shopping district.

The one amazing experience was stumbling upon the 1254 Dom Cathedral. It was the singing spilling out faintly into the nearby streets which drew me in.

Let’s wrap the trip up in this post. Morning comes early for that 11am flight. Short 30 minute train to the airport.

Hop on our pretty plane. 9 hours later, a quick connection in Boston. Just enough to enjoy a lobstah roll (yes that’s how you prounce it).
