Day 9 - Nearly Titanic / Early arrival into Nuuk, Greenland

Weather on the sea here changes so quickly. One minute there are clear skies with beautiful sunsets.

The next you’re deep in an intense fog bank.

In fog the ship runs at 10 knots. Randomly the ship turns hard to port and the engines roar at full power. Wait a minute then you witness what caused the bridge to gun it. A giant piece of ice which was in our way, hiding low in the fog. I fully understand now how Titanic went down. Thankfully we’re doing this part of the ice flow in the day.

After three solid days at sea we’re finally in Nuuk. We weren’t supposed to be here for an additional 9 hours but a medical emergency happened a day ago and the captain had to gun it to get to port early.

12am and it’s still light outside.

Ice has drifted even to this protected harbor (upper right).

Another reminder, if you’re traveling far away from home, carry a million dollar health emergency policy. The poor person will not only be charged for the care onboard the ship but they’ll receive a hefty fee from the port for employee overtime, extra dock time, local hospital care.
