Day 6 - Nordfjordeid, Norway

My body still hates me this morning. So sore from yesterday’s hike.

It was hard to find much information about this port. After landing we learned why. It’s not known for anything, more just a transit spot to see the local glacier. Bus tour today (which I really dislike doing). Let’s see what this glacier is all about.

The final destination is actually Olden. It becomes clear quickly how beautiful this valley is.

Inside the church is covered with dragons
Unmistakable green from glacier silt
These walls, unlike Alaska, are made of volcanic rock. When the glaciers came through the silt got suspended even to this day which gives the green
And just like Yosemite, the glacier silt makes for incredible planting fields

The plan once we leave the tour bus is to jump onto a “troll car” and get whisked away to the glacier. Not long ago you’d take an actual goat or horse to the glacier but these cars made it a quicker and safer trip.

To get to the glacier we have to go through the waterfall that is created from the melting snow.

A quick 10 minute hike from the dropoff point and this is your view. While this looks small the glacier actually quite large The glacier is actively moving, having advanced and retreated a total of 6000 feet since 1900.

Norway is great in that they don’t editorialize facts. They just state them, like in the photo below.

Local scientists say the glacier was at its smallest in the 13th century

Time to leave the glacier and check out the views

Roomba lawn mowers keep things pretty

After talking to some folks on the tour it struck us as odd as tomorrow’s port is Olden. After we departed we learned this fjord is their version of Alaska’s inside passage. It’s the big reason most of the German’s onboard book this trip.

We began our 2 hour sail up the fjord
Ever wonder where your Nordic salmon is farmed? In pins like these
You can see the resemblance to Alaska
It’s 11pm and the ship will sit roughly 300 yards from tomorrow’s dock
