Day 6 - Picton, New Zealand

Other than the wild dolphin swim idea, I’m very excited about seeing this port. Picton is what Alaska use to look like before it became overdeveloped.

Today we’re doing a cruise up the Queen Charlotte Sound to both see the vistas along with eating freshly pulled green mussels fresh from the sound.

As luck would have it there is a natural deep water port. This helps support the main source of revenue for the town (lumber) and tourism (cruise ships)

This is the view just feet off the rear of the ship. Would be fun to have seen the reaction when this giant ship was in their window upon waking.

I always find grave yards beautiful. This one is just a short walk from downtown and is full of history.

Time to head back downtown for a quick look around the 4 block area before boarding the harbor tour.

I had to try their fish and chips. As you can see from this photo, portion sizes are massive. In total this meal was $8 and absolutely delicious.

1:30pm – time to set sail and see the Sound. But first some local fish and chips. Not bad for 8USD.

Mussels grow like wild grass here due to the high protein in the water and water temp. Each of the below balls hold roughly 1,000 pounds of mussels. Here they’ll grow to full size in 18 months. The locals love farming them because they naturally clean the water while also helping to foster a great environment for fish and dolphins in the sound.

Along with fresh green mussels we were treated to fresh New Zealand King Salmon

I would be ok having my boat anchored here.

This area is an odd combination of Hawaii and Alaska with the lush landscape hills.
